Singapore 2013 Series: Singapore Art Museum

I was quite lucky because the week when I was in the Lion City also happened to be the Singapore Art Week. It was a week filled with visual art events from left and right, Singapore was practically buzzing with excitement. Although I wasn't able to catch everything, especially the paid ones (haha), I am pretty satisfied with the ones I saw. One of the places I was able to visit is the Singapore Art Museum or SAM in Bras Basah Road. 

A little flashback before I continue. When the Cheese and I were on Singapore last February 2012, a melting Superman met us in front of SAM.

Fast-forward to January of 2013. A new installation artwork, designed by Gerald Leow, inspired by the famous Greek statue Laocoön and His Sons will welcome you.

Entrance fee was waived that day as SAM participated in the week-long art week events. Yay!

My mobile snapshot of lower right painting does not give justice at all to its beauty because it absolutely is. It was so simple yet mesmerizing. My friend Ten and I both fell in love with it!

Photography inside the museum shop is not permitted which, obviously, I found out too late because I was able to catch a quick snap of these notebooks with witty statements.

After taking in the sights inside the main building, we walked a bit and crossed the road to get to SAM at 8Q, an extension of the Singapore Art Museum. There's a bit of trivia on how Sam at 8Q got its name. The more obvious one is its location. It is located at No. 8 Queen Street near Bras Basah Road. As for the not so obvious one, it is said that SAM at 8Q is roughly 88 steps away from from its mothership SAM. I don't know about you but I find that really cool!

I'm gonna have a bit of bias here when I say that I liked this installation mainly because it was by a Filipino artist named Leslie de Chavez. Reprezent!

Thank you Singapore Art Museum for a lovely and stimulating afternoon. I had so much fun! I can't stress it enough, Manila need more museums, museums with nominal fees easily accessible to the public.

Apolinario Mabini Hapi Wheelchairs Parade

After the Barney show in Eastwood Mall and 2 carousel rides for my goddaughter Kai Mykonos, we talked Mitch into coming with us to The Mind Museum for the Apolinario Mabini Hapi Wheelchairs Parade, an event to kickstart the National Disability Week. 

We weren't prepared for what we saw. There was a medium-sized crowd hanging and looking around the coolest art wheelchairs I've ever seen in my life! You may wanna read Tita Babeth's article here to learn more about this event.

The Art of the Brick

The scrimp in me almost made me skip this wonderful and once in a lifetime experience. I'm so glad I pushed though, pikit-mata paid the swanky cashier with my hard-earned $SG15. Ang drama!

A quick chika before I go on with the exhibit. On the elevator going to the 3rd floor where the exhibit was, there were persons on the lift. There were 2 guys talking to each other - one Asian and one Caucasian holding some food (?!?) on a styro - and me. I kept discreetly glancing on the Caucasian guy thinking if he was someone I know or have seen somewhere.

When the door finally opened to this.

He even smiled to me after bidding goodbye the Asian guy he was talking to. Fast forward to the end of the exhibit. That guy on the lift was this guy:

NATHAN SAWAYA, the brick artist himself! Rats. If I only knew.

Anyhoo, the Art of the Brick exhibit seriously gave me all the jimjams. If only I have someone to share it with and someone to take my photos this experience would have been nothing short of perfection, darnit :))

Bitternes aside, I present you some of the best brick works I've ever seen in my life that seriously made me wanna weep while looking at them. But I was alone and it wouldn't do me any good.

For the finale, the star of the show: T-Rex! It was really big too bad I don't have a decent photo with it. I don't like those selfie shots kasi hihi.

If you ever find yourself in Singapore, I recommend that you catch Nathan Sawaya's The Art of the Brick exhibit on the ArtScience Museum. It will run until April 14th so better catch it now and prepare to be a lil kid again!

Things that amazed me:

This event happened yesterday but I was too busy to write anything about it so it happened a day later here in my blog (boohoo). Still.. Anyway, this was definitely an event worth camwhoring for, every photographer's dream,. I bet they were drooling with the idea and jumping with too much excitement of capturing the awesome but a bit eerie event.

Kailan Ka Ba made me cry. Kahit kelan ko pakinggan kakaiyak talaga. Same goes for Huwag Ka Nang Umiyak.

Conversation with an old friend made me smile. Wala lang. It's funny how things becomes so good after a "wala lang naman talaga" talk with them. So, don't ever think that little conversations are useless, because those little conversations really make up for good memories.
